Hey there, folks! Get ready for a rootin’ tootin’ tale about a clever rabbit, a sneaky fox, and a whole heap of sticky trouble! This is the story of Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby, a story full of tricks, laughs, and a whole lot of “Oh no, he didn’t!”
Meet the Characters
First up, we got Brer Rabbit! He’s one smart cookie, always hopping around and getting into mischief. He’s got a twinkle in his eye and a plan up his fluffy sleeve!
Then there’s Brer Fox, a grumpy old varmint who’s always trying to catch Brer Rabbit. He’s got all sorts of traps and schemes, but Brer Rabbit is always one hop ahead!
Brer Fox’s Sneaky Trap: The Tar Baby
Brer Fox was plum tired of Brer Rabbit always outsmarting him. He needed a foolproof plan, something so sneaky that even Brer Rabbit couldn’t wiggle his way out of it!
So, Brer Fox cooked up a plan to build a Tar Baby! He figured this sticky critter would be the perfect trap to finally catch that pesky rabbit.
He mixed up a big batch of gooey, black tar and shaped it into a little person. Then, he dressed it up in some old clothes to make it look real.
Brer Fox carefully placed the Tar Baby right in the middle of Brer Rabbit’s usual path. He hid nearby, rubbing his paws together, just waiting for the fun to begin!
Brer Rabbit Meets the Sticky Situation
Brer Rabbit came hopping along, feeling mighty pleased with himself. He spotted the Tar Baby and stopped, scratching his head. “Well, howdy there, stranger!” he called out.
But the Tar Baby just stood there, silent as a stone. Brer Rabbit, being a bit of a show-off, expected a friendly hello back.
“I said, howdy!” Brer Rabbit repeated, a little louder this time. Still nothing. He started to get a little riled up. Who ignores Brer Rabbit?
“Are you deaf or somethin’?” Brer Rabbit huffed. He threatened, “If you don’t answer me, I’m gonna have to teach you some manners!”
Then, Brer Rabbit punched the Tar Baby right in the face! His paw got stuck! “Let go of me!” he yelled, and punched it with his other paw. Now both paws were stuck!
He kicked with one foot, then the other. Soon, Brer Rabbit was completely stuck to the Tar Baby, covered in sticky, black goo! He was in a real pickle!
Brer Fox’s Big Moment

Brer Fox jumped out from behind the bushes, grinning from ear to ear. “Well, well, well,” he chuckled. “Looks like I finally caught you, Brer Rabbit!”
He was so proud of himself. He thought he had finally outsmarted the smartest critter in the whole wide world.
Brer Rabbit’s Clever Plea
Brer Rabbit, even though he was stuck, didn’t give up. He knew he had to think fast! “Oh, Brer Fox,” he pleaded, “please don’t do anything terrible to me!”
He begged, “You can do anything you want, just please, please, PLEASE don’t throw me in that briar patch!” He knew Brer Fox would want to do the opposite of what he asked.
Brer Rabbit suggested, “You can drown me in the river, or hang me from a tree, or even skin me alive! Just anything but the briar patch!”
Brer Fox, being as mean as he was foolish, thought he had finally won. He believed Brer Rabbit was truly scared of the briar patch.
“Alright, Brer Rabbit,” Brer Fox sneered. “Since you asked so nicely, I’m gonna throw you right into that briar patch!” He grabbed Brer Rabbit and swung him around.
Freedom in the Briar Patch
With a mighty heave, Brer Fox tossed Brer Rabbit right into the middle of the thorny, prickly briar patch!
But instead of screaming in pain, Brer Rabbit let out a whoop of joy! “Yippee!” he shouted. “I was born and bred in the briar patch!”
Brer Rabbit wiggled and hopped through the thorns like it was the most comfortable place in the world. He was home! He was free!
Brer Fox stood there, dumbfounded. He couldn’t believe he had been tricked again! Brer Rabbit had outsmarted him once more!
